Noble Beast

Chicago born Andrew Bird has always sounded like he’s writing from his own lost wilderness, the setting for a fairy tale turned creepy where ‘the kittens have pleurisy’. A master violin player and expressive singer, he has a gift for tender laments but Bird’s sound is clean and sharp, its melancholy precise. Pulling rock, country and folk shapes through his own unique filter, there’s epic scale to his songwriting here – as on Effigy - tracks journey through layered moods and offbeat effects, including his extraordinary whistling skills. And on this, his fifth solo album, he characteristically throws some curveball cheerful melodies into the wistful narratives, as on Fitz and the Dizzy Spells. The beautiful, rolling Tenuousness has something of the backlands in the guitar licks as Bird muses his connection to this world. Noble Beast comes over all warm, woozy and pastoral, while you sense the underlying perfect steel tension of a pop artist who wears his intellect on his sleeve.
